DICT joins Open Data Day celebration

The Department of Information and Communications Technology, through its Open Data Philippines initiative, took part in the celebration of the International Open Data Day organized by the Youth Alliance for Freedom of Information (Youth-FOI).

The event, held at the Commission on Human Rights on 7 March 2020 and attended by several youth leaders in Metro Manila, featured an activity called 2020 Data X Art Philippine Youth Ideathon Challenge. It aimed to increase the awareness of the youth in the importance of open data.

Aida C. Yuvienco, director of the DICT’s Government Digital Transformation Bureau, talked about the whole-of-government approach to establish a single portal for government open data. She also emphasized the important role of the youth in the responsible use of open data, especially in their social media engagement. She encouraged the youth leaders to become active participants in the promotion of data openness and transparency.

Ben Hur Pintor, a fellow of the School of Data, emphasized the importance of collaboration not just for government agencies but also for other sectors to make the most out of the government open data.

2020 Data X Art Philippine Youth Ideathon Challenge is one of the many simultaneous events done locally and internationally to celebrate International Open Data Day.
